Artist Q&A with Strathalbyn Artist Kathy Hardy Smith

Kathy Hardy SmithKathy lives in Strathalbyn and has been displaying her work at Ella Jane since we opened in October 2018.  The strong, bold colours she uses and the texture that she can get into her works make them popular.  Kathy is currently our best-selling artist.

We asked Kathy 10 Questions...

ONE       What inspires you?

I'm inspired by seeing what other people are creating with their material of choice. Their passion and the enjoyment they get from being creative is very inspiring.

TWO       How long have you been making art? How long did it take to develop your style?

About six years.  I think I'm still developing my style.

THREE     Who/What are your biggest influences?

I am influenced by all artists. Seeing what other people can do just by applying paint to paper is amazing.

FOUR      What is your most important artist tool?

My brushes and spatulas.

FIVE      Is there something you can’t live without in your studio?

My trusty easel.

SIX       What is your favourite medium to work with and why?

Acrylic. Atelier brand is my favourite as you can rework it just by adding water.

SEVEN     What about the creative process excites you the most?

Seeing the final painting come together.

EIGHT     Six people, dead or alive, you’d invite to dinner?

Maggie Beer, Ellen Degeneres, Ivor Hele, Dawn French, Magda Szubanski, Anh Do.

NINE      What’s the story behind this artwork?

This is my interpretation of our sunburnt country.  I think the colours I have chosen are as close as you could get to the real thing, bold and vibrant.

TEN       Your top tip for people who are motivated to become more creative?

Never give up, and watch as many artists as possible to pick up lots of different tips.  Be happy and confident in your own ideas.
